Hello, everyone, and welcome to my page! Your teacher may have sent you here, or you may be a teacher or parent of a teen student in need of help right now. We’re navigating quite a situation here, but it will all be ok. It’s really tough to teach this age level without content-specific knowledge. Math Giraffe offers ideas, insights, resources, and teaching materials to guide you in teaching math creatively. But I’ve also been working on some posts for all different aspects of teaching teens (and pre-teens) lately.
We all understand these are hard and scary times, and students and teachers everywhere are adapting to remote learning. So, we want to provide tips and resources for you. (Note: this is more geared towards middle and high school. So if you have a teen or pre-teen stick around!) First and Foremost… Take a deep breath...that’s right..inhale, exhale. Our world is a little shaken up right now, but we will get through this, together. Get Focused The most you may have ever done for your child regarding schoolwork is help with homework. So, of course, you might be feeling overwhelmed with schools closed. First thing you need to do is get organized.
Resources to Help You Understand Remote Learning and Technology Remote Learning includes embracing technology. Many classrooms have switched to Google Classrooms. Here are some resources to help you learn: (If you’re a teacher, my friend Leah Cleary shares some great remote learning tips here.)

6 Podcasts for Those of Us Who Love, Teach, or Live with Teen Students“Teenagers are so easy!”
-said no one ever. Teaching teens middle school and high school can feel joyful and rewarding most days, but can also frustrate you with one challenge after another. They go through so many changes and so many ups and downs at this stage of life. Young adult brains are still growing. Contrary to popular belief, students’ brains do not stop developing after childhood (or even until partway through their 20’s!) and brains are also greatly influenced by their environment. Teen brains are physiologically different from adult brains, and these differences need to be taken into consideration. To catch up on the neuroscience, read What Teachers Need to Know About Teen Brains. Here are some podcasts to help you in your journey of teaching teenagers. Yep, I've gotten it officially published and you can now order copies to get shipped right to you. Your school can order these for your classroom through Barnes & Noble here. This is a great way to purchase a class set, and receive one book per student. This option is also wonderful for homeschool, since you can pay per student rather than purchase the teacher license for the digital file. Those digital licenses that have already been available on TpT are per teacher and entitle you to print for all your own students each year. This is still an option, and is very cost effective for teachers with entire classes of students who are willing to print and copy pages themselves. But this new paperback, on the other hand, must be purchased for each student. Copying is prohibited. It's a high quality book with sturdy paper all bound in one place for students to keep as a workbook of doodle notes for all 10 chapters of middle school Pre-Algebra content. If you have any questions about the two options, just let me know. Here is a video with more detail, so go take a peek inside! Once you check out the options, let me know how I can help you decide which version of the book is right for you and your middle schooler(s). You can use this to cover all the key topics from 6th-8th grade Pre-Algebra. They'll love the brain-friendly interactive blend of graphic and linguistic input, and will enjoy the added benefits of focus, creativity, and better retention of their math lessons.
