Complete, Free Guide to Teaching Slope

Complete, Free Guide to Teaching Slope of a Line (PDF Download)
This download is a free guide for teaching slope, including:

- printable warm-up to review prior knowledge

- introduction through inquiry: a discovery activity for developing the concept of slope (printable worksheet to be done in pairs)

- what to include in lecture/note portion of the lesson

- suggestions for practice

- printable 1-page quiz to use as an assessment

- additional links (ads) for related resources that you can purchase to accompany the lesson

In the inquiry activity, students have to work with a partner with almost no guidance from the teacher to decide how they will order the "steepness" of a variety of ramps and staircases from least steep to steepest.

This challenge will lead them to find a way to assign numerical values to the steepness and make observations from there.  It's a perfect way to build the foundation for the concept behind slope.

Love your blog, site, pins, tpt. What do you think about Google Classroom and how do you use it with your students?

Hi Lisa!
Thank you so much :)
I unfortunately do not have much experience with google classroom yet.. sorry I can't help! My friend Leah teaches different subjects, not math, but has a ton of ideas for how to organize everything and take full advantage. You may want to check out her blog and see if you can adapt some of it. She's quite the expert on blending digital and paper learning models smoothly: http://www.leahcleary.com/
Hope this helps! Thanks!

Is this aligned to Common Core? It seems like it, so I wanted to ask.

Hi Deborah,
Most of it is in cooperation with common core yes, although the only things that are "aligned" to hit every single standard are the end-of-course tournaments. I sat down and checked of every single standard to be sure those would review the entire year of common core. The rest of what I've created, I do as topic-based, so they generally will work with any curriculum standards. Most things cooperate well with common core because they hit the regular skills that are in there plus blend the deeper thinking and the standards for mathematical practice. Thanks so much for your interest! :)
Have a great day!
